A few tips you should learn as you enter Canada!

To all of our Fall 2022 students: welcome aboard! If you are a new student that has just recently arrived in Canada, or you’re planning on coming to Canada for the first time, especially if you’re an international student, this is for you!

Here are few things you need to take care of upon arrival, and some tips to help you go through those processes more easily.

Get your TCard

A TCard is a physical piece of identification that you must have for accessing different areas on-campus. Your TCard is your key to different services and facilities like libraries, athletic facilities, exams, printing services, meal plans, and more. It includes your photo, UTORid (click here in case you have not activated your UTORid yet), student number or personnel number, and a barcode.

In order to save time and to get your TCard faster, you can now submit all required documents online and schedule an appointment to pick up your card as soon as you arrive on campus. Click here for more information regarding the procedure.

UHIP

UHIP is a mandatory health insurance plan for all students or employees from outside Canada enrolled at the University. If you are an international student at UofT, your UHIP is already included in your tuition, and it will automatically enroll you on September 1st, 2022. In case you do not receive your UHIP card and need to access it, please contact uhip.information@utoronto.ca, or visit the International Experience website

COVID-19 Vaccinations

If you still haven’t received your COVID-19 vaccine, you must do so, as per UofT’s vaccine requirement. The University will require students living in residence for the 2022-23 academic year to be vaccinated against COVID-19, including at least one booster dose.

Where can you get your vaccines?

On-campus: COVID-19 vaccine appointments are available through Discovery Pharmacy for members of the U of T community, including those who may not have an Ontario Health card. Appointment times are avaliable based on vaccine supply. Book your appointment here

Off-campus:

Toronto Public Health vaccine clinics are located throughout the City of Toronto. Pop-up clinic options are currently very limited and individuals are advised to use City Immunization Clinics or Hospital Immunization Clinics. Health cards are not required (but bring some form of identification). Please be sure to request and keep a receipt.

CAMH Vaccination Clinic on Queen Street West is open by appointment and provides a calm, judgement-free space to support people with vaccination anxiety, as well as those with mental illness, substance use disorders, dementia, and other neurodiversity. Consult the web site for more information.

Social Insurance Number (SIN)

Upon arrival to Canada, getting your Social Insurance Number (SIN) is recommended. It is a 9-digit number that lets you work in Canada, or access government programs and benefits. Your SIN is private and must not be shared with anyone. Click here for more information on how to protect your SIN.

Service Canada is responsible for issuing SINs. There are different ways for you to apply for your SIN and receive it. It can be done in person or online. Make sure to check the procedure to follow and documents required to apply for your SIN.

Travel to and from Canada: Restrictions Update

Travel restrictions have been updated on July 15th,  and here’s what you need to know if you are planning on travelling soon, including how revised rules, passport delays, Covid, and monkeypox restrictions may affect your trip.

What changes do you need to be aware of if you’re planning a trip?

– COVID-19 restrictions are gradually easing. As of June 20th, passengers are no longer required to be fully vaccinated in order to board a plane or a train in Canada. In other words, passengers no longer need to be vaccinated with two doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine, or with one Johnson & Johnson dose.

– Federally regulated workers are also no longer required to be fully vaccinated, which means that airline and airport employees that were on unpaid leave due to their vaccination status will be able to return to work, which will make the pace of work at the airport faster. Mandatory random testing upon arrival in Canada continues off-site.

What stays the same?

– Vaccinated travellers returning from abroad must still meet entry requirements: using ArriveCAN to submit their travel and COVID-19 vaccination information within 72 hours before their arrival to Canada.

– Masks remain mandatory on trains or planes.

– Those who are unvaccinated must still meet extra testing and quarantine requirements. In case of failure to abide by requirements, they may face a fine of up to $5,000 or criminal prosecution. Outbound travellers must continue to abide by other countries’ entry rules. Vaccine mandates for cruise ship passengers and crews remain in place.

Should you get the HPV vaccine? Here’s what Discovery Pharmacy experts say

Did you know that some sexually transmitted diseases can lead to cancer? Darsh Shingala, Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) student at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, and Jonathan Nhan, Pharmacist Lead at U of T’s Discovery Pharmacy explain what these infections are and what you can do to help protect your health.

Discovery Pharmacy provides personalized care and prescription medication services to all U of T students, staff, and faculty. To get your prescriptions at Discovery Pharmacy, book a New Prescription appointment today on the Discovery Pharmacy website.

What is the HPV vaccine?

HPV is short for human papillomavirus, a common sexually transmitted disease. While many HPV infections resolve on their own and do not lead to serious health concerns, certain strains of HPV can lead to cervical cancer in women, and other types of cancer in both men and women. The HPV vaccine is designed to prevent HPV infections by stimulating the immune system to provide protection against the virus and its potential complications.

What does it do?

Different strains of HPV can spread through sexual contact. Although most people who get HPV do not have symptoms, it can occasionally cause genital warts. Genital warts may become infected, but there are also more serious complications that can occur. One complication that can arise from HPV in women is the development of cervical cancer. For men, an HPV infection can increase the risk of penile cancer. It is also possible for both men and women to develop cancer in the back of the throat (known as oropharyngeal cancer) as a complication of an HPV infection.

Who should get the HPV vaccine?

The fact that HPV vaccines can help prevent infection and serious health conditions that might occure because of infection means that they are an important tool to help protect your health. In Canada, HPV vaccination typically happens in childhood and early teen years with children between 9 and 14 receiving two doses. Teens and younger adults who get the vaccine at later ages, between 15-26, should get 3 doses. If you are in this age-group and have not received the HPV vaccine, you can book an appointment to receive the vaccine through U of T’s Discovery Pharmacy.

If you are over the age of 26 and are interested in getting the vaccine, pharmacists at the Discovery Pharmacy are available to discuss if the HPV vaccine would be beneficial for you. People who should not receive the vaccine include pregnant women, moderate or – severely ill people, and people with allergies to yeast or latex should avoid the HPV vaccine.

What are the side effects?

The HPV vaccines are very safe and well tolerated by most people. Like many other immunizations, the most common side effects are soreness, swelling or redness at the site of injection. Fainting after the injection can occur as well. Other rare side effects include dizziness, headaches, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, or weakness.

How can I book an appointment or ask more questions?

You can book an appointment for the vaccination service through the Discovery Pharmacy website or get in touch with a pharmacist by scheduling a time for a consultation. These dedicated appointment times give you 1-on-1 access to a pharmacist to get answers to the questions that you have.
