Diwali (pronounced: di-vah-lee), also known as Deepavali, is one of the most important and widely celebrated festivals in India, observed by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists. It is a significant festival that typically takes place between October and November, on the 15th day of the Hindu month of Kartik.
The festival, often referred to as the Festival of Lights, signifies the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. To symbolize this, Diwali is often celebrated by illuminating oil lamps or diyas (pronounced: dee-yahs) as well as candles and lanterns, praying, gift-giving, and so on. Festive sweets are a key part of Diwali celebrations, and Indian confectionery such as halwa (grated vegetable cooked with ghee, sugar, and milk) and fried, flour-based treats like laddu and gulab jamun.
All are welcome!
